Mohenjodaro (written on 12 May 2020 - iphone notes)

Pieces falling all around

Like ashes on a burning ruin

Such pieces as dissolve between my fingers

Once plans now soot

Once joys now ash

Once treasured now waste

Once hopes now dust

What can I reclaim amongst these cooling embers?

Dreams roasted to crisp...

Months fleeting like muddy snowmelt

On trampled, trodden roads

Wishes, like yesterday’s obituaries

Today’s street vendor’s cones

Goals, vision, the final scene!

The pen that blazed on a canvas clean

The colours that rippled and snaked and shone

The mighty eagle upon the lofty stone...

Rolled up and tucked under a sweaty pit

Puckered and spattered, smelling like shit

Is sold today for peanuts

To a smoked-up whore of a half-drunk git

Peanuts

Roasted in their shells

Peanuts

Boiled in their shells

Picked clean and eaten one by one

Then one by one and one by one

Until there was none

Of the peanuts

The shells - those useless reminders of happiness

Scraps which when you step on,

don’t even retain a crunch

Good for nothing, just no fun

Frankly, a bit smelly even...

Like dreams

Hopes and plans

For tomorrows that came

But didn’t quite come

I sit amidst these shells, these cones

Amassed, my giant, useless coffin-dome.

My Innisfree (written on 23 June 2019 - iphone notes)

there was no title to this piece. I gave it a title today (26 oct 2026)

Right now

I wish I were asleep

Or awake on an island shore

Waves break around me

In weedy webs of crabs in foam

Some slither and scuttle away

And some stay

Watching the waves come and go

Then come and go...

Like you and me, they know

This is the best dream of their salty little lives

This night, these waves

And this endless time

(The 'this' in the last line was added by me today for the sake of prosody)

No title - It's not fear... (written on 29 april 2019 - iphone notes)

It's not fear

It's defiance

Learn to tell the difference

But you're so full

Of the self you accuse me of

It's like earwax

Makes you deaf

To what I'm really saying

And so, to me

You're deaf

And blind

Even though all my life

All I ever wanted was to make you see

I'm mine, though always yours

I am you, yet always me

The Fool's Song (written 17th March 2019 - iphone notes)

I've been thinking

A lot lately

What's the meaning

Of all the things you've said to me

I've been trying

A lot lately

To keep hope afloat

And not rock the boat

And keep you happy

I see what you are doing

A lot clearly

I was gladly a fool in love

But now a fool in reality

That's what I've always been

I see it all clearly

That's what I've always been to you

A pretty flower

A wasted hour

A poster story

A blaze of glory

A weeping child

A wanton wild

A matter of pride

A whim denied

A fairly good wife

A fool for life

That's what I've always been

I see it so clearly

That's what I've always been

To you

Songs of Existence - two pieces

Songwriting is not a piece of cake. In fact, it is not even like writing poetry. Poetry flows without heed, without direction, without warning, without even a need to make sense or to reach out and be understood. Definitely doesn't spare a dime's worth of thought for being appreciated. Poetry is a sullen, self-serving craft.

Songs are different. Songs are born with a single purpose - to be heard. And to be sung by those who hear it, but that's up to them. Songs are poems of perpetual optimism, even when they speak of sad things. That is because they live and hope to be heard. They don't tell you, "Don't hear me, I won't make sense and I don't care if I don't." And even if they do, they want you to hear them say so. Again and again.

So here's an attempt (for the sake of a friend) at song-writing. Therefore, an attempt at trying to make sense. All the best!

(written on 13.3.19, late at night)

Lost Time

It was a midsummer night
A little past eight
We stood on the bridge
That led to Sherry’s gate
You’d downed your two red wines
And cried away your first heartbreak
And I held
Held your hands
Held your tears
Held your sorrow...
But it was late
Too late

Would you turn around the clock for me?
Would you sing another song?
Would you sit a little closer?
Would you take me along?

(Written in an MRT)

In how many ways shall I let you know
You’re mine?

I’ve stood on the highest mountaintops
And with my love I painted the skies
Walked through the valleys of shadows
As the mountains echoed my cries
I’ve thrown myself off cliffs
Where the lonely eagle flies
I’ve dialled your number a million times
Just to hear your voice

But you
You just don’t believe me
You just don’t understand
In how many more ways shall I ever let you know

You’ve always been mine?

Whatever happened to the sanctity of bodily fluids?

Ascetic. The word

------------------

"Midnight shakes the memory

As a madman shakes a dead geranium..."

And the world lies curled in bed

For nothing ever rose from the dead

But we both know that isn't true -

For though I turn to ash, I am still with you.

A cafe in the mountains. A cup full of grey. A hundred years of solitude. A dream of Leh.

I said, " I shall not yield anymore

To a destiny I did not write."

He smiled, and in his icy hands

Cradled the bloody axe.

Lines come and lines go

And

I stand in a field of virgin snow

And a million butterflies erupt around

Oh what a wonderful way to die!

The Keening (incomplete)

There's the day that I died
It was pretty ordinary
It had rained that afternoon
And the puddles hadn't dried

I stepped out in the sunlight
Hoped to get somewhere
Didn't know how I'd get there
To the place I

She hid her little jewel in the folds of her cloak

She shone it with her spit and smiled at herself as in it she shone

For it was she as she was it

And the only world she knew began and ended with it alone...

Coffee

 (written 21.11.18 - iphone notes)

Too much coffee is bad for health

Too much sugar is hopeless too

Too much butter on burned toasts

And just one smoke, all thanks to you

Too much talking under moonlit skies

Too many dreams on cloudy days

Too many promises cloaked in lies

But just one truth like a slap on the face

Wake up. Wake up and smell the coffee

Smell the dank stench of despair

Arise and OD on this cup of bitterness

The shake your head and let down your hair

Truth is a liqueur, acrid black

Drink it hot, like a witches' brew

Let vileness and caffeine infuse

And your wretched broken heart renew

You bargained hard, you bargained long

But the deal was never yours to win

Like love sworn true on drunken nights

Lies forgotten in the morrow's bin

Pinch yourself so hard it hurts

Chafe raw with asking why

You went all out, you put all in

And all you got was a giant lie

So drain your cup to the final dregs

Refill until it froths again

Then up the bottom, then fill once more

And up the bottom, and continue

And thus, till every taste is wiped away

Bitter is honey, bitter is bread

Bitter yellow mangoes, bitter apples red

Bitter are victories, and memories too

Until you are coffee. And coffee is you.

(the word 'and' in the last line was added by me on 26 oct 2026, coz I had a feeling it used to be there originally but I don't see it in my notes... but then it makes sense to have it, so there.

Also i'm thinking the word 'continue' at the end of the second last stanza needs to be changed to rhyme with 'again' a few lines before it.)

No title (written 8 oct 2018 - iphone notes)

 There was a something

Amidst all that noise a deep resounding peace

Amidst all that strife, a shared joy

In the web of lies, hands shaken in faith

In the babes of millions, voices that spoke

One heard just by the other

In the stillness of the night
